Perhaps Compass Rose would volunteer to take the 700 million in losses the company stands to acrue if it has to go thru the FDA's lengthy (and quite ridiculous esp. as compared to other countries)human trials process?

While I have seen examples of companies setting on patents that made me angry, this isn't one of them. If anything, I"m angry at the Feds for making such a stupid series of roadblocks for something that should be a no brainer.

But then , these idiots can't manage the economy. What makes anyone think they are fit to manage healthcare or much of anything else is beyond me.

Forgive me for another volley...but Pfizer earned my undying animosity the moment I learned in 2004 that the company holds a patent (through Warner-Lambert) on a pseudoephedrine molecule that CANNOT be turned into methamphetamine....
~
...But Pfizer has consistently refused to develop and produce the new pharmaceutical for use in over-the-counter medicines. How come?
~
They won't do it unless the US government socializes the R&D costs and guarantees them profits. Which lawmakers were reluctant to do, for obvious reasons. (Socialized R&D, privatized profits.)

~
Pfizer has thus held this nation hostage, forcing the public to pay countless billions per year to cope with the misuse of their patented molecule.

A company like that shouldn't be allowed to exist. Never mind be allowed to get bigger/more influential. Never mind be allowed to suckle at the teat of a housing crisis.

PS--Sabin, I agree entirely that profit firings are devastating in the ways you describe...at the same time they are undoubtedly functional for corporations who for decades now have made money spawning fear, stress, and conformity that can be leveraged into profits. Rather than producing anything of enduring value.

@Rose,
That is an excellent point:

~
"how companies can report and record slashing jobs as contributing to profits. Having to throw workers onto the streets to stay in business should be viewed as a failure of management."

When the dust clears, the record shows that layoffs are expensive and disruptive to a company. Rather than fear enhancing productivity among the remaining, the stress actually suppresses creativity, reduces the flow of ideas, and prevents people from taking chances. I read where IBM got back on track largely by not over hiring followed by massive layoffs as business cycles.

Unfortunately, it seems legitimate business is modulated by emotional investors who know they can make a short-term profit on an irrational concept such as layoffs yielding profits. The same case can be made for M&A. Most mergers produce reverse synergy (and massive layoffs, see Pfizer) and the loss of competitions rarely offsets the disruption of the business and the huge debt load of the deal.

...but in the end, if you know the boss, you might get a hefty bonus when your company gets absorbed, e.g. Bank of Armageddon - Moral Lynched

Sorry, everyone, the TARP money for the Pfizer deal is from JPMC, Citi, BoA, and GS, not Merrill. I'm not sure why I'm typing the latter for the former; third time I've done it today.
